While down at Daytona this past week, TSE had the opportunity to test the new Penske Pro Package 8987 Triple PiggyBack. During our first sprint race of the weekend (GTU), which was only our second session on the shock, Scotty was able to turn the fastest lap of the race (1:52.4).

As a testament to the performance of the current Penske lineup, just plugging the shock in without making any adjustments Scotty was able to turn a laptime fast enough to have qualified him 11th on the grid for the 2011 Daytona 200…

DAYTONA BEACH — Meghan Stiles-Ryan looked around Stall 14 in the Daytona International Speedway garage and identified the members of her family, all of whom have made their semi-annual trek here for motorcycle racing.

“There’s my grandfather and that’s my mother-in-law, my dad, my mother and my husband,” the 26-year-old racer from Delavan, Wis., said inside the busy garage area.

Both Meghan and her husband, Scotty Ryan, had just competed in the Championship Cup Series Expert GTU six-lap sprint over Daytona’s 3.56-mile road course Saturday afternoon.

Scotty finished sixth, losing ground on the last lap because his rear tire began to “chunk” or come apart. He was not happy. Meghan was 24th.

“We have been married about a year and a half,” Meghan said, as her husband cooled off. “We’ve been together more than six years now.”

How did they meet?

Way back when, Scotty suffered a nasty tumble in a Wisconsin club event. He sought out Jane Stiles, who was a certified ETM, for a quick diagnosis.

“One of my buddies recommended I go see Jane to check me over, and that’s how I met the family,” Scotty said. “I broke some ribs and she mended me.”

Jane’s husband Mark, 46, and their daughter, Meghan, were competing in the same weekend of racing.

“My daughters grew up at the track,” Mark Stiles said. “Meghan was a real track brat. She saw how much fun I was having and decided, ‘Hey, I want to do that.’ ”

Mark and Jane’s other daughter, Leiha Stiles-Johnson, doesn’t race, but she goes to the track to help the family when needed.

“She couldn’t make this trip,” Meghan said.

Jane, 46, not only makes sure the family has provisions, but she also fuels the bike as part of the pit crew.

“We all work together,” she said.

On Friday, Meghan and Scotty shared a bike in the Michelin Team Challenge and finished third overall. That finish propelled them to the Michelin Pro Series GTU championship.

The series-winning bike is owned by Stiles Racing and prepped by Scotty and his father-in-law at Mark Stile’s machine shop, which specializes in race bike suspensions.

The Ryans both enjoy the Speedway. Each have made Daytona 200 starts — Scotty in 2007-08 and Meghan in 2009. Scotty plans to enter again in 2012.

“That was a big accomplishment for both of them,” Jane Stiles said. “That was a dream come true.”

Scotty fits right into the Stiles’ family unit. He, too, is hopelessly hooked on motorcycle road racing. He caught the bug when he was a kid.

“Both Meghan and I, at a young age, started racing motorcycles,” Scotty said. “If you want to be in a relationship with somebody, you need to find somebody who supports what you do. We support each other tremendously.”

Scotty, 28, may be the lone Ryan wearing leathers when the family returns for Daytona 200 Week in March.

“We’re going to try and get pregnant,” Meghan said, giggling. “If I’m not pregnant at the start of next year, I’ll do some races.”

At this level of racing, competitors lean heavily on friends and family for support.

“I’m glad we all get along well enough that we can do this as a family,” Mark Stiles said. “We are one of the closest families I know because we spend so much time together.”

DAYTONA BEACH — Dane Westby tire-tested his way to victory in Friday’s Michelin Team Challenge at Daytona International Speedway.

The Fall Cycle Scene racing program continues through Sunday at the track.

Westby, riding John Ulrich’s M4 Suzuki, cruised to victory on his Michelin Pro Series GTU class machine, which is built to AMA Pro Racing specs.

AMA sanctions the Daytona 200 and Westby’s primary mission was to punish his Dunlop tires for 44 laps over the Speedway’s 3.56-mile road course as a prep to the prestigious Bike Week race.

“That was pretty much the idea, to get pit stops, make sure our quick change tire stuff works,” Westby said in Victory Lane. “This was just practice for us. Some of those other fast guys had mechanical troubles.”

Westby will stay here Monday and Tuesday for a closed-door Dunlop tire test. Friday’s Challenge, which featured three classes of racing motorcycles, was Dunlop’s precursor to that two-day practice.

Dunlop suffered a major tire failure during the 2011 Daytona 200. The company vowed to get its rubber right for next year’s 200, a 57-lap AMA race scheduled for March 17.

“We have got U.S.-made Dunlop tires now, not the English-made stuff they had here for the 200,” Westby said. “They are really good. I just ran a test tire, and it worked well.”

“This gives us a leg up on the 200,” Ulrich said. “One of the big things on my to-do list is a Daytona 200 win. Dane has got as good a chance as anyone and this was a nice little test run for him, the bike and crew.”

Second place overall went to Eric Helmbach, who claimed the Challenge Series GTO championship. Helmbach, who was aboard a BMW 1000, has won three consecutive Challenge titles.

Westby beat Helmbach to the finish line by more than 17 seconds.

“I didn’t really have a chance against Dane,” Helmbach said. “Those guys were really fast. I wanted to run a clean, smooth race and wrap up the championship. That was my main goal.”

2nd Place Finish

Stiles Racing was second in GTU and third overall. The Yamaha 600 was shared by Meghan Stiles Ryan and Scotty Ryan. The team, based in Delavan, Wis., is owned by Meghan’s father, Mark Stiles.

Stiles Racing was the only team on the overall podium with two riders.

“We are absolutely thrilled with podium,” Meghan said. “We have done several top threes and won overalls this season. To come to Daytona, we weren’t expecting an overall win, so third place is wonderful.” The track opens at 8 a.m. today. Racing begins at noon.

Thank you all for a great 2011 season, we are working very hard to build our brand and we had many racing accomplishments already this season. Tommy Hayden won the first AMA Superbike race for Penske Shocks, then Martin Cardenas followed that up with another win. Both riders ended the season championship in the top 5, Tommy 3rd and Martin 4th. In 600 action, Cory West put us on the podium during the Daytona 200, Cameron Beaubier had many podiums in his rookie season and a strong finish from Danny Eslick gave us a couple wins and then ultimately the AMA Daytona Sportbike Championship.

Through a season of great accomplishments and development came a couple new ideas and valving packages. First off our 8983 and 8987 shocks will offer an AMA Pro upgrade ($250 with new shock) this season. The upgrade will feature new negative spring bearings with updated springs, a 600cc (softer) and Superbike (stiffer) spring will be offered. In addition we will be featuring the VB or Variable Bleed Piston (replaceable jets) along with specific valving specs for each motorcycle…all this for an additional $250. We had two GSXR 1000′s, four GSXR 600′s, two R6′s, and a Ducati 848 all finish in the top five in AMA Roadraces with this new package in 2011!!!

The most exciting news is the introduction of the 7500 Double Penske Shock intended as a street line, pictured is the Honda Hawk. We will be offering these shocks for shipment starting in October for the following motorcycle applications. Our concept behind this shock is to offer a more affordable option for the street rider that still retains the Penske quality.

Bloomingdale, GA – Perfect weather at Roebling Road welcomed Round One of the Michelin Pro Series and Michelin Team Challenge. With temperatures hovering in the low seventies, a cloudless sky, and a light breeze, the weather was flawless for the start the 2011 ASRA season. Saturday’s Team Challenge race was punctuated by two red flags during the course of the event, neither resulting in major injuries. The second restart was flawless for rider Meghan Ryan who not only showed perfect timing and speed, but also carried her starting advantage for the full lap and set the tempo for Team Stiles in their final dash to the GTU class and Overall victories aboard their Yamaha R6.

Team Stiles comes into the season off a good result in 2010 having finished runner up to RNR Repsol by only four points. In this first round the team expected a good finish in GTU. They did not expect the overall win according to team owner and manager Mark Stiles, “The GTU class win was what we wanted today; the Overall win was just a bonus. We’re out to win the GTU championship this year. Meghan’s restart after the red flag was just awesome. That’s the best start she’s ever done. She ran her quickest laps after that restart and Scotty was his usual fast self. It was everything I expected from him.”

Team Stiles took the GTU class victory and the Overall top spot as perennial Overall and GTO favorite Eric Helmbach tucked the front and took a tumble in turn three. Helmbach, riding solo for Chester Auto Repair, managed to get back to the pits and get his front master cylinder repaired, but in so doing pulled the bike behind the wall and was forced back to lap zero according the the rules. Thus Helmbach handed the overall win to Team Stiles and the GTO top spot to Tim Ivanoff’s Thrashed Bike Racing. Ivanoff commented on the class win aboard their Buell, “Our expectations were a top three finish overall and we bettered that, finishing second. And we expected to finish second in GTO, but with Eric’s mishap we were gifted with the opportunity for the GTO class win and took full advantage. Walt Sipp performed as expected. I am so pleased that he volunteered to come help us. He and Joel Spalding put in an excellent effort for out team.”

When asked about the incident that played to Thrashed Bike’s GTO victory, 2010 Team Challenge Champion and BMW rider Eric Helmbach said, “I was looking forward to the race and defending my number one plate from last year. The bike felt great. I took off at the beginning of the race and got a good lead, but at about the quarter way point in the race I tucked the front over here in turn three. I salvaged a third place in GTO and it was good for the points despite the problems. It was a pretty good turnout for the event, so we’ll see what happens at Carolina.”

The Michelin Team Challenge frequently attracts CCS and ASRA champions as new teams start up in the chase for the title. 2011 is no exception in this regard. In GT Lights we see a new team for 2011, Saddlebaum Racing, comprised of 2010 Michelin Pro Champions Jim Fotinopoulos, Mark Miller and Jim Cohrs. On the way to the track they all decided to familiarize themselves with Roebling Road by entering Fotinopoulos’ training bike, an SV650, in the Team Challenge event They had no idea they’d get hooked on the format. They had so much fun on the bike and just running as a team that they’ve made a pact to try and run the remainder of the Team Challenge series for 2011. Said Fotinopoulos, “We were just on the way down to Roebling and said why don’t we run the Michelin Team Challenge to get a little more time on this track because it’s our first time here. We thought it would be very good learning tool to slow things down a bit on a slower bike and really learn the layout of this race track. And its beautiful, flowing track. We had no expectations except to have fun. But by the tenth lap or so Mark had a huge lead and it looked like we could win this thing.”

The class and overall top thee finishing order was as follows:
